Gambling

Gambling, which evidence suggests has always been a part of the human experience, is arguably more popular than ever around the world. Fueled by changes in communication, commerce, and cultural values, gambling opportunities are seemingly ubiquitous. It has been noted that this generation of young people has grown up in an era when gambling has always been commonplace and widely accepted. Given this broad context, young people's perceptions regarding budget issues (some perceiving themselves to have discretionary funds for entertainment and others seeking creative ways to generate the funds), and the developmental stages of our young people that many of them are engaged in gambling activity to one degree or another. What may be surprising is the extent of the gambling activity in which they are engaged, the extent of problem and pathological gambling among students them and the potential impact it may have on them, and the puzzling incongruity between the extent of the activity and the lack of awareness or attention on the part of many parents, educators, and others involved in helping them achieve their life goals.
