Suicide is a growing concern in North Dakota, and North Dakota's statistics rank toward the top in the nation.
For example, the following statistics help to explain why suicide is a growing concern here in North Dakota:
- North Dakotans ages 45-54 turned in the highest suicide rate of 17.6, based on the deaths per 100,000 in the years of 2000-04. The U.S. Average was 15.2.
- North Dakotans ages 25-34 saw almost similar numbers at 17.4 in the years 2000-04. The U.S. Average was 12.7.
- From 1994-2003, 797 people committed suicide in North Dakota. This averages out to about 80 people per year.
- The male suicide rate is four times greater than the female rate. Males account for 81 percent of suicides and females 19 percent.
